Vintage 2017 - by Hamish Kempthorne, Head Winemaker of Waimea Estates
To say that the Nelson grape harvest of 2017 threw out some challenges would be an understatement. However, despite the at times wicked hand of Mother Nature the wines now safely fermenting in tank and barrel are full of promise with some exciting wines to look forward to as an expression of the Nelson wine-growing region for another year.
A treasure haul of medals; Nelson winery Richmond Plains taking out three of the 26 Gold medals awarded and four Nelson wineries receiving a further five of the 16 Silver medals at the New Zealand Organic Wine Awards.

It was fantastic to be able to host the NZ Winegrowers Aromatics Symposium in Nelson in January this year and even better to read what the Delegates had to say about their stay in our region.

Extraordinary.
That’s how I’d describe the efforts of the generous group of volunteers who worked tirelessly across three days to ensure that the Nelson wine region was firmly positioned on the NZ wine map for the 55 Delegates that New Zealand Wine (NZW) brought out from 12 countries for the Aromatics Symposium. Because of the extraordinary efforts of this group of volunteers Nelson was able to showcase our region not only for our excellence in wine-making but also as a region of producers who care for each other and for the continued success of our wine regions future.
Another successful haul of medals at this years Air New Zealand Wine Awards, where 1,392 wines were entered. 6.5 percent of entries were awarded Gold Medals and 70% of all entries received awards.

It's no secret that Nelson produces some of New Zealand's finest wine; from Chardonnay to Aromatics, Sauvignon to Pinots. But it's always great confirmation when our wines are recognised amongst the greatest.
Two Nelson Pinots were named as the top two NZ Pinots by Jasper Morris MW, in a recent tasting of NZ Pinots for the magazine The World of Fine Wine.
2016 marks 40 years since the pioneering family-owned winemakers, Seifried Estate, first grape harvest.
