Making the ordinary extraordinary.
Day One of Sommit™ 2018 arrived with the full force of Cyclone Fehi hammering our region; destroying a much-loved local iconic restaurant, evacuating families from their homes and burying our hired tables, chairs and wine boxes in half a metre of sand. But despite these obstacles Wine Nelson won the battle. Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of a large group of volunteers we were still able to showcase our region not only for our excellence in wine-making but also as a region who care for each other and for the continued success of our wine regions future.
The Sommit™ was attended exclusively by 17 International Sommeliers and targeted to their interests. The event was a celebration of the lesser known aspects of New Zealand wine, with particular emphasis on the facets that resonate with the sommelier community. Cameron Douglas MS and Stephen Wong MW were hosts, adding a New Zealand sommelier voice.
Even while Cyclone Fehi continued to devastate the region on the first day of the event the disruptions had minimal impact on the Sommeliers attending.
Thanks to boat owners Barry & Lynley Bird from Galileo boat charters for rescuing wine and wine glasses from onboard their boat docked at Nelson wharf, whilst being evacuated themselves during the king tide.
Many thanks to Kevin Hopgood for managing to accommodate the arrival dinner at his restaurant instead of onboard the Galileo without any fuss.
Special thanks to all of the volunteers that helped with the one thousand wine glasses that had been transported, unpacked and polished but then needed to be re-transported to the new Masterclass venue, all in the rain and in flooding conditions without any wine boxes as they had been buried in half a metre of sand during the king tide event at Kina Peninsula, along with 15 hired trestle tables and 40 chairs.
And thanks to the incredible generosity of Tim & Judy Finn who agreed to host the Masterclass event at Neudorf with only half a days notice.
Jane Docherty, Anna Seifried, Rosie Finn, Steve Gill and Lars Jensen tirelessly poured wines, polished glasses and set and re-set the room all day during the Masterclass.
Winemakers & Viticulturists Jonny Hiscox, Cam Trott, Dan Manuge, Alistair Ashcroft, Chris Seifried and Ryan O’Connell transported the Sommeliers in an impressive ute convoy (complete with wine dog on the back tray) to the Upper Moutere Inn for a post-Sommit™ beer before driving them back to their hotel ahead of the farewell dinner at the Cod & Lobster.
"Sometimes the most ordinary things could be made extraordinary, simply by doing them with the right people" - Nicholas Sparks.
