The Air New Zealand Wine Awards is the premier wine competition in New Zealand recognising excellence in winemaking. The competition is owned and organised by New Zealand Winegrowers, the national organisation for the country's 1,700 grape growers and winemakers.

This year's competition saw over 1,300 wines entered and two Nelson wineries took out trophies from the 17 awards presented on Saturday night.

Seifried Estate won the 'WineWorks Champion Sparkling Wine' trophy for their 'Aotea by the Seifried Family Méthode Traditionnelle Nelson NV'.

Falcon Ridge Estate won the 'New Holland Agriculture Champion Exhibition Red Wine' trophy for their Syrah Nelson 2016.

For a wine region producing only 2.2% of NZ total harvest, Nelson continues to be recognised for its excellence in winemaking, with outstanding results in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Aromatics and now Syrah and Sparkling. #nelsonshines
